Bikini Series Book Club - A Little Update

Happy official first day of the Bikini Series!

A little book club update and check-in from me ♥
  • I've now made the Bikini Series Book Club forum open and easy, so you don't have to wait to get 'approved' before you get chatting.  You can access it from the main menu at the top of the page.
  • A few people have said that they won't be able to get hold of a copy of the book until midweek, so might not be up to speed by the first date on our reading schedule (which you can find here). If this applies to you - don't stress it, just join in once you're up to speed! It's not a massive book so you will be able to catch us up.
If you've started it, I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am!

Bikini Series Book Club - First Book Kick Off

Happy Sunday everyone!

I hope you now have a copy of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves and are ready to get reading!

If you are a TIU team member who has only just stumbled across this post but wants to get involved in the book club, don't worry! Jump back and read the last post on this blog to get up to speed and then join us back here. We'll be reading two books during this eight week Bikini Series, and any TIU team member is welcome to join at any point as long as they are happy to catch up with where we are in the current book.

Our first book is split in to six parts, so our reading segments and discussions will be split that way too.

I know a TIU girl likes to plan ahead, so here's our reading schedule for the next four weeks:

Read to the end of PART 1 by Thursday 16th April
Read to the end of PART 2 by Monday 20th April
Read to the end of PART 3 by Friday 24th April
Read to the end of PART 4 by Tuesday 28th April
Read to the end of PART 5 by Saturday 2nd May
Read to the end of PART 6 by Wednesday 6th May
Final wrap up discussion on Thursday 7th & Friday 8th May

Book choices for next read go up on Friday 8th May
Book number two announced Saturday 9th May
Book number two kick off Sunday 10th May

I have created a special Bikini Series Book Club forum right here on the blog. You can find it on the main menu at the top of the page. The forum is closed and involves a quick and easy registration to join and get talking(UPDATE: The forum is now open for ease of access). I have created a post within there already to request your feedback about the format of the group, so please feel free to go and say hello!

On the 'read by' dates above, I'll guide the discussion by posting thread questions about what we've read so far. After these have gone up, please feel free to add your own questions too!

Some people read faster than others, and discussion will naturally be ongoing, but please can I ask you to be considerate to others and not post or discuss anything you come across prematurely.

Happy reading everyone :)

Bikini Series Book Club - Book Announcement

Welcome to the Bikini Series Book Club!

If you missed the previous post, don't worry, you're still very welcome to get involved! To catch up and see what BSBC is all about, you can read the first post here.

Thanks to everyone that voted for our first book. The winner which received nearly half of the votes is...

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
by Karen Joy Fowler
Rosemary's young, just at college, and she's decided not to tell anyone a thing about her family. So we're not going to tell you too much either: you'll have to find out for yourselves, round about page 77, what it is that makes her unhappy family unlike any other. Rosemary is now an only child, but she used to have a sister the same age as her, and an older brother. Both are now gone - vanished from her life. There's something unique about Rosemary's sister, Fern. And it was this decision, made by her parents, to give Rosemary a sister like no other, that began all of Rosemary's trouble. So now she's telling her story: full of hilarious asides and brilliantly spiky lines, it's a looping narrative that begins towards the end, and then goes back to the beginning. Twice. It's funny, clever, intimate, honest, analytical and swirling with ideas that will come back to bite you. We hope you enjoy it, and if, when you're telling a friend about it, you do decide to spill the beans about Fern - it's pretty hard to resist - don't worry. One of the few studies Rosemary doesn't quote says that spoilers actually enhance reading.

You also voted on the number of books to read during the Bikini Series, with two coming out on top. That gives us four weeks for each book, starting with the one above. I know some of you voted for less or more than that and that we all read at different paces, but I hope most of you are still able to join us.

If you've already read 'We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves', you're still very welcome to join in with the discussions on the book as long as you are conscious to respect how far others are as we at each stage and don't give anything away! If you'd rather wait until book two, that's absolutely fine. We'll do another vote for book number two as we approach the Bikini Series half way point.

So you've got the weekend to grab a copy! Check back here tomorrow for the kick off post, your first amount of chapters to read, plus details of how we'll get the discussion going.

Happy Bikini Series prep weekend all!

Bikini Series Book Club Launch

Hello TIU Team!

During last years Bikini Series I noticed some people including 'reading more' within their summer goals, and when it started cropping up again this year, I thought it might be fun to set up a Bikini Series Book Club to not only encourage people to get reading but also to get talking to fellow TIU book lovers.

So if you made it to this page, fantastic, let's get started!

First things first, I need to know how many books you'd like to cover in the 8 weeks. If it's just the one, that's absolutely fine. However I know everyone reads at different speeds and has a different amount of free time, so I'd like to get an idea of what most people would be comfortable with.

How many books would you like to read? - POLL CLOSED
Next up - what to read! I've selected the following four options for our first book. Please vote for which you'd prefer and we'll settle on the one with the most votes. Should there be a tie, I'll do a blind selection (you'll have to trust me!).

I've gone for a selection of fairly popular books to hopefully appeal to most. If you usually like something a bit 'grittier' or a certain genre, just let me know in the comments below and this can be taken in to account should we do a second selection during the Bikini Series.

Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found
by Cheryl Strayed
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

The Miniaturist
by Jessie Burton
On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. She has come from the country to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt, but instead she is met by his sharp-tongued sister, Marin. Only later does Johannes appear and present her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in unexpected ways...

Nella is at first mystified by the closed world of the Brandt household, but as she uncovers its secrets she realizes the escalating dangers that await them all. Does the miniaturist hold their fate in her hands? And will she be the key to their salvation or the architect of their downfall?

Beautiful, intoxicating and filled with heart-pounding suspense, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

Elizabeth is Missing
by Emma Healey
Meet Maud.

Maud is forgetful. She makes a cup of tea and doesn't remember to drink it. She goes to the shops and forgets why she went. Sometimes her home is unrecognizable - or her daughter Helen seems a total stranger.

But there's one thing Maud is sure of: her friend Elizabeth is missing. The note in her pocket tells her so. And no matter who tells her to stop going on about it, to leave it alone, to shut up, Maud will get to the bottom of it.

Because somewhere in Maud's damaged mind lies the answer to an unsolved seventy-year-old mystery. One everyone has forgotten about.

Everyone, except Maud...
